Colossians 1: 24-2: 5

"Joyful Commitment"

Paul was deeply committed
To his calling and his goal.
He sought to spread the gospel
To every living soul.

It mattered not to Paul
That he was suffering  pain.
He was focused on eternity.
Heaven would be his gain.

Paul knew he could not quit;
His work was not yet done.
Prison would not stop him
From the task he had begun.

Paul was overjoyed because of
The mystery of God's salvation.
The gospel was for all men!
It was meant for every nation!

Paul rejoiced over the faith
His Colossian brothers had shown.
Their love was steadfast.
Their faith abided and it had grown.

Though attacked by false teaching,
Colossians' faith was unshaken.
Their anchor was in Christ alone.
They knew they were not forsaken.

When we are fully committed,
Our joy will overflow.
Peace will be in our hearts.
Our faith will continue to grow.

Will you surrender to Him?
Will you let Him lead you?
Blessings will come your way!
His will is perfect and true!

.Sue Hudgins
Sue writes a weekly poem to go along with Sunday school lessons.  She has a gift of teaching God's word through poetry and inspiration from God.  I hope you enjoy her poems and are blessed as I have been from reading them and learning from the Word of God.  And as a poetry artist myself, I know that Sue is also taught and inspired by the very words God tells her to write.

"Forgiveness"

Paul wrote Philemon
A warm and tender letter.
He wrote about Onesimus,
Hoping to make things better.

Onesimus had run away
From Philemon, his master.
It was a bad situation,
But not a total disaster.

Paul had led both men
To faith in Jesus Christ.
Their salvation was settled,
Bought at a very high price.

Paul beseeched Philemon
To forgive his runaway slave.
Extending love and forgiveness
Is the Christian way to behave.

Onesimus had been helpful
During Paul's imprisonment.
Paul now returned Onesimus,
And well wishes he also sent.

Onesimus was sent as a brother,
Not as a runaway slave.
He was now a true believer,
No longer a scheming knave.

While we were running from God,
Christ paid redemption's cost,
Offering love and forgiveness
That we might not be lost.

Thus it behooves each of us
To be loving and forgiving,
To show a Christ-like spirit
In all of our daily living.

"WATCH YOUR WORDS!"

We utter many words each day
Without thinking what we say.
Some words bring hope and cheer,
While others bear scorn and fear.
Sometimes it's how we say a word!
The tone of our voice as it is heard
Can often reveal our true intent
And disclose what we really meant.
Words can be so wonderful!
They can gladden and bless the soul.
So, choose your words carefully,
And speak your remarks prayerfully!!

Colossians 1: 15-23

"Christ Alone"

False teachings began to surface
At the Colossian church.
Paul did not want to see
The name of Christ besmirched.

He wrote a letter explaining
That Christ is above all.
He is the Lord of the universe,
Yet He hears us when we call.

Christ created all things.
He is seen in every flower.
He ordains our entire world.
He reigns with His great power.

Christ is the Lord of the Church.
His position is the head.
The Church is the body,
And by His word we are fed.

Christ existed before creation.
He and the Father are One.
God revealed Himself to us
Through Jesus, His only Son.

Christ is the pathway to God.
He is the Truth, the Way.
He seeks the lost sinner.
He seeks those who go astray.

Christ alone can save.
He paid our debt of sin.
He alone can change hearts.
Only He can give peace within.

The Lord of the universe
Died upon the cross.
He died to reconcile us to God.
He died that none might be lost.

If you have not accepted
Jesus into your heart,
Why not do it today?
Christ has done His part!

I Kings Chapters 19 and 20

"Down but not Out!"

After the victory on Mt. Carmel,
Elijah became despondent.
Jezebel had threatened his life.
And he was no longer confident.

Elijah fled to the wilderness
And sat under a juniper tree.
He asked God to take his life,
But God would not grant this plea.

The angel of the Lord came
And gave him meat and drink.
He arose and went to Horeb.
There he could rest and think.

When God spoke in a still small voice,
Elijah knew he was not defeated.
Then God sent him on his way
With other jobs to be completed.

He anointed Hazael and Jehu;
He anointed Elisha too.
Elijah realized at last
That he had more work to do.

At times we feel defeated,
And we feel we are alone.
But we must remember
That God is upon His throne!

So when you feel beaten,
Just get a second wind.
Keep looking to Jesus for help.
He is your very best friend!

USE YOUR FREEDOM FOR OTHERS
HILLCREST BAPTIST CHURCH, JULY 8, 2003
GALATIANS 5: 1-15

"Christian Freedom"

The very word, freedom,
Carries a special ring.
It fills our hearts with joy.
It makes us want to sing.

Freedom for Americans
Has come at a very high cost.
We must always guard it,
Lest it be forever lost.

Even greater to believers
Is the freedom that we know.
Faith in Jesus, our Savior,
Makes our joy overflow.

Paul urged the Galatians
To serve others in love,
To use their spiritual freedom
To glorify God above.

Paul made it very clear
That freedom did not give
License to indulge in sin
Or to be careless how we live.

The entire law of God
Is found in one command
Love your neighbor as yourself.
This is what God planned.

Let us always be thankful
That Christ has set us free.
Let us serve others in love
As we serve Him faithfully!

FOCUS ON THE RISEN SAVIOR

Hillcrest Baptist Church,
April 20, 2003
Easter LessonLuke 24: 1-53

"He Lives!"

On the first day of the week,
As dawn broke through the skies,
The women went to the tomb.
Tears filled their eyes.

Jesus, their teacher and friend
Had been killed, crucified.
His body had been entombed.
They wished He had not died.

Mary and other women
Brought spices to the tomb.
They did not know then
Soon joy would replace gloom.

They found an empty tomb.
Jesus' body was not there.
The stone had been rolled away,
Their hearts were full of despair.

Suddenly two angels appeared,
Giving them reason for joy.
Jesus was alive; He had risen!
Death's power He had destroyed!

The women ran to tell the news
That Jesus had risen from the dead.
He rose and He lives forevermore,
Bringing hope instead of dread.

Christ defeated the bonds of death.
He lives as King of Glory.
Upon Him our sin was laid!
What a triumphant story!

He offers hope and life eternal,.
He died on the cross for you.
Accept Him as your Savior,
This I pray you will do.!!

Colossians 3: 1-17
Holy Living

"Old Life vs.New Life"

Paul reminded the Colossians
Of the standard which God expects.
Holy living should be our goal.
God's perfect love it reflects.

Setting our sights on
Things which are above
Will change attitudes
Into hearts full of love.

Sinful practices must not be
A part of a believer's walk.
Greed, idolatry, lust, and lies
Do not belong in Christ's flock

Anger, wrath, malice, slander,
Filthy language too
These things have no place
In the life of a believer true.

Gentleness, patience, humility,
Compassion and kindness
These special traits are the ones
Christians should possess.

The old man with his deeds
Has been cast far away.
The new man is now a saint,
Living for Christ each day.

Let the word of Christ
Dwell richly in you.
Give thanks to God the Father
In all you say or do.

"SOLOMON'S REQUEST"

When Solomon came to the throne,
He was a very young man.
Some said he was only twenty,
But he was a part of God's plan.
With such an overwhelming job,
Solomon felt a great need.

He knew he needed wise counsel,
If he hoped to succeed.
The Lord appeared in a dream,
And gave Solomon a choice.
Solomon was very humble

As he listened to God's voice.
"Give me wisdom," Solomon said.
"I will need a discerning heart.
To judge so many people,
I need wisdom to impart."

God was pleased with this request,
And He promised this and more.
Solomon would be a great king
With many blessings in store.

All of us need wisdom
To meet the trials of life.
Many dangers await us,
And days are full of strife.

Ask God daily for wisdom
To guide your steps aright.
He will lead you safely.
He is the God of great might!

TRANSFORMATION

"God's Transforming Power"

Paul had not been to Colossae,
But a church was started there.
He wrote to these believers
Concerns he wanted to share.

Lives had been transformed
By the gospel news.
God was working in hearts.
Salvation they did not refuse.

Colossians' faith was growing.
They were bearing fruit.
God's perfect will in their lives was their eager pursuit.

Paul prayed that God's power
Would bring patience and peace.
He prayed that their good deeds
Would continue to increase.

A Christian life is a daily walk.
We must move in the right direction.
God will lead us forward
As we strive for Christian perfection.

God's power still transforms.
Lives are changed each day.
Do you need to make some changes? Let God show you the way!

John 21: 1-25

"Cast a Net"

Peter decided to go fishing,
And the others went too.
Many things had happened.
This seemed what they should do.

All night long they fished,
Yet their nets were empty.
When the morning sun came up,
They saw Jesus beside the sea.

Jesus told the fishermen
To cast their nets once more,
Cast them to the other side.
Then they caught fish by the score.

Obedience brought reward.
Many fish they caught that day.
When they were sure it was Jesus,
They went to shore without delay.

Jesus had a meal ready,
One that He had prepared.
"Come and dine," Jesus said.
Sweet fellowship they shared.

Three times Jesus told Peter
That he should feed the sheep.
Three times Peter vowed his love.
This charge he would surely keep.

We are called to witness too,
To launch out into the deep,
To cast the net of the gospel.
We must reach the lost sheep!

Jesus gives us a commission.
He calls us to our tasks.
Will you serve Him faithfully?
Will you do what He asks?

"SOLOMON'S SUCCESS"

The first twenty-four years
Of Solomon's reign had passed.
He had started many building projects
That he hoped would last.

He fortified the cities;
He built walls that were strong.
His success and achievements
Made a list quite long.

The kingdom was at peace,
And God had surely blessed.
Solomon's fame spread far and near.
Other nations were very impressed!

The Queen of Sheba heard
Of Solomon's great success.
She knew that she must go
And put Solomon to the test.

She traveled to Jerusalem.
She had to see for herself
If Solomon was truly
A king of wisdom and wealth.

The queen was overwhelmed
By what she heard and saw.
The half had not been told
She observed with unfeigned awe.

Solomon's blessings and success
Came from God above.
Solomon had worshipped God
With a heart of sincere love.

God will bless us too
If we will trust and obey.
He will give us wisdom.
His way is the best way!

"God's Plan"

Before the dawn of creation
God had a wonderful plan,
A plan to redeem the souls
Of sinful, fallen man.

God prepared the way of Messiah
Throughout all of history.
Jesus would fulfill the plan.
His work would be the mystery.

Jesus' lineage included
People of a wide range.
The Messiah had been promised.
He would bring great change.

Joseph was astounded
To learn of Mary's condition.
But an angel appeared
And explained Mary's mission.

Joseph did not hesitate
To obey God's command.
He took Mary as his wife,
Thus carrying out God's plan.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem!
The Messiah had come at last!
He was born to die for us,
Fulfilling prophecies of the past.

Gives to all who will believe.
He is the Truth, the Way.
Will you His gift receive?

"A Second Chance"

Though Jonah was disobedient,
And he tried to run away,
God gave him a second chance
To do His will and to obey.

The instructions were repeated.
"Go to Nineveh and preach!"
Many wicked folks were there.
Through Jonah they must be reached,

He was thankful that his life was spared,
And Jonah arose and went.
God wanted the people of Nineveh
To have a chance to repent.

It was not easy for Jonah
To follow God's command.
Yet he obeyed the Lord
And preached to every man.

He cried that in forty days
Nineveh would be overthrown.
At once the people believed.
For their sins they wanted to atone.

In sackcloth and ashes
They turned from wicked ways.
They prayed for God's forgiveness
And for peace in the coming days.

Revival swept through the land.
A change had taken place.
The people heeded God's message,
And they experienced God's grace.

God is kind and merciful.
He deals with us patiently.
No wonder that we love Him,
And we serve Him faithfully.

THE WAY OF WISDOM

Hillcrest Baptist Church, January 4, 2004

Proverbs 1: 1-19

"Wise Up!"

The proverbs in the Bible

Contain wisdom divine.

They give us clear instructions.

God's precepts they define.

Reverence for God

Is the starting place

For becoming a wise person,

For wanting God's will to embrace.

Realizing that God

Is the source of all wisdom

Enables us to dismiss

Evil ways so cumbersome.

A proper kinship with God

Will help us to see

How we should live and

How to grow spiritually.

Foolish people turn away.

They despise God's instruction

They reject God's Word

As they head for destruction!

Wise people turn to God.

They love to hear His ways.

They accept His will,

Giving Him honor and praise.

Will you seek the wisdom

That comes from God above?

He gives to those who ask.

He is a God of love!

WISDOM OF PROTECTING HUMAN LIFE
Sunday for Observing Sanctity of Life

Exodus 1: 1-2: 10, Proverbs 24: 11-12

"Life, A Gift!"

God wants His people to see
That everyone is valued and protected.
Life, which is a gift of God,
Should be cherished and respected.

In days of long ago in Egypt,
When Pharaoh ruled the land,
He feared the Israelite growth.
So he issued a harsh command.

He ordered the midwives
To kill each newborn male child.
He thought this plan would work,
Just throw them into the river Nile.

But the midwives feared God
And saved the babies alive.
They ignored the king's orders
And the Hebrew babies survived.

God blessed the midwives,
And He blessed the Hebrew nation.
God's laws were kept and taught
From generation to generation.

In the divine plan of things,
Baby Moses' life was spared.
He was destined to free his people.
God would see that he was prepared.

Each life is a gift from God.
Each life must be respected.
Will you obey the voice of God
And help those who are unprotected?

UNDERSTANDING GOD'S COMPASSION
Hillcrest Baptist Church, December 28, 2003
Jonah 4: 1-11

"The Pouting Prophet"

Jonah burned with anger
When Nineveh was spared.
He was so angry that
For his own life he despaired.

God was teaching Jonah
A lesson he needed to know:
That God is merciful and
Blessings He seeks to bestow.

Jonah was not happy
That Nineveh had repented.
He wanted God to destroy the city.
So he pouted and lamented.

What a terrible attitude
Jonah was displaying!
It must have grieved God
As much as his disobeying.

Jonah knew that God
Is merciful and compassionate.
Jonah had been forgiven,
Yet his heart was full of hate.

Jonah thought only of self.
He wanted things his way.
The Ninevites were enemies!
He wanted them to pay!

Do we think only of self?
Do we fail to see the lost?
Our salvation was not cheap.
It came at a very high cost.

For God so loved the world
That He sent His only Son
To die on the cross
For mankind's sin to atone.

Are we willing to share
The message of salvation?
God wants the message sent
To every wayward nation.

Take the salvation message
To those you meet today.
Show others that you care,
Do it now! Do not delay!

VIEW FINANCES WISELY
Hillcrest Baptist Church, February 22, 2004
Lesson taken from various verses in Proverbs

"Financial Faithfulness"

Accumulating great wealth
Is what many want today.
Some do not even care
If they cheat along the way.

God gives the proper perspective
On dealing with our finances.
We should always seek His will
And not take foolish chances.

We are to honor the Lord
With the first of our harvest.
Then our barns will be full.
And we will be blessed.

The one who trusts in riches
Could be headed for a fall.
But the righteous shall flourish,
Though his income may be small.

Better is the poor man
Who walks with integrity
Than a greedy rich man
Who prospers by dishonesty.

It is better to get wisdom
Than to gain silver or gold.
Wisdom is priceless.
It cannot be bought or sold.

Be wise with finances!
Handle money with care!
You will get the blessing
When with others you share.
